Emmanuel’s powerful story

Emmanuel faced a future without sight, struggling to keep up in school due to advanced keratoconus in both eyes. His dreams were fading, and he had to drop out of school. But thanks to the dedicated care of Dr. John and the support of Vision Share, Emmanuel received the corneal transplants he desperately needed.

Today, his vision is restored, and he’s back in school, studying to become a medical doctor with the goal of specializing in cornea health.

Hear Emmanuel’s powerful story as narrated by Dr. John Nkurikiye, Executive Chair at RIIO iHospital in Rwanda, Africa (a Vision Share partner since 2016).

Your generous donations make stories like Emmanuel’s possible.

Together, we can support global sight restoration

Everyone should have access to corneal tissue. Sadly, this is not true for millions of people living in developing countries. Currently, over 12.7 million people suffer from corneal blindness, a condition that is often preventable or treatable. Together, we can change this reality. Our mission is to support global sight restoration, and your contribution helps us achieve this goal and bring hope to countless individuals.

Some key information and metrics

Meeting the tissue needs of lower income nations is becoming increasingly difficult. Half of all cases are preventable. Your gift will transforms lives.

When You Give You

Provide Corneal Tissue

Every tissue is a gift, and finding a home for that gift is our priority. However, each gift is subject to tissue processing fees that could make sourcing tissue difficult, or even impossible. Your donation will subsidize these fees for those with limited funds or provide total reimbursement for those unable to pay. Everyone should have a chance to take advantage of a cornea transplant when needed. Your donation gives them a chance.

Assist with Shipping

Patients around the world have difficulty paying the high cost of shipping fees. These charges can prevent people in need from requesting corneal tissue. Your donation will help those struggling with shipping costs and remove this barrier so surgeons can focus on providing life-changing corneal transplants without burdening their patients with the high cost of shipping.

Support Vision Share’s Mission

A portion of your donation will support Vision Share’s operations including eye bank member communications, surgeon/patient support, and program development. Each of these functions provides Vision Share with the necessary tools to support global sight restoration.

In 2016 at the American Academy of Ophthalmology conference in Chicago, I visited the Vision Share stand. This was probably the moment that changed what I’m doing in terms of cornea transplants. This opened access to quality cornea tissue for more than 8 countries in Africa, starting with Rwanda. Because we were a network of hospitals with the same ownership. This partnership changed many lives in Africa. I think between 400 to 500 people have benefited from this encounter since 2016.

It allowed me for example to give a good cornea to a young boy who was 8 years old. He had Acute Hydrops. After starting to work with Vision Share, we could order, get a cornea and get the transplant done within seven days. This was not possible until I met Vision Share.
